What we know is that breast conservation surgery has a range of complications in between 5-25% of the cases and we see that with oncoplastic breast surgery that the rates of complications are pretty much the same. So we don’t have a higher number of complications but sometimes we can have more aggressive complications after oncoplastic breast surgery. So what we have to take care when we are intending to do an oncoplastic surgery we have to do a good and to see if the patient has some comorbidities like diabetes, hypertension, obesity and if she is a smoker or not. Those factors altogether increase a lot the chance of complication and those complications can impact on adjuvant treatment. So if we exclude those cases and we select the patients well, we dominate the surgical technique, it’s very unusual to have a very major complication and we can treat our patients with mammoplasty techniques or reconstruction techniques with implants or myocutaenous flaps with low rates of complications.
Clinical applications in this case
Yes, we have just cohort studies because it’s very difficult to do a group like those groups are smokers or obese. But what we do, we do a cohort study watching for the factors associated with complications in oncoplastic surgery and on traditional breast conservative surgery. So, comparing those groups, we can extract what are the major points of complications. At the end what we see is if you didn’t make a good preoperative selection of patients, if comorbidities are present.
