Dr Aldine Basa speaks to ecancer about intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) at her institute the Asian Hospital and Medical Center in Manila, Philippines.
She explains this is the first hospital in the Philippines to purchase IORT equipment, which is given to patients who have their breasts conserved. In most cases, IORT can be reduced to a single dose.
The multi-disciplinary team at the hospital decide which breast cancer patients would be eligible for IORT.
Dr Basa concludes by highlighting that the cost of IORT may be a barrier for some patients.
