ASCO GU 2026: Updates in metastatic prostate cancer
Dr Ricardo Pinto discusses genomic profiling of triple-negative breast cancer samples from Angola and Cape Verde, addressing the underrepresentation of African populations in omics research. Through international collaboration between Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries, biopsy samples were collected and analysed using exome sequencing and bioinformatic approaches. The study identified five putative novel driver genes for triple-negative breast cancer in a sub-Saharan African context, supported by multiple lines of evidence.
Dr Pinto also highlights molecular pathways related to DNA repair and radiation response that may help explain disease characteristics. These findings underline the importance of inclusive genomic research to improve understanding and management of breast cancer in diverse African populations.
