Introducing oncology to undergraduate medical and allied health sciences students
Charles-Antoine de Beaumont speaks with ecancertv at the 2016 World Cancer Congress about The Faraday Project, a clothing line based around insulating sources of electromagnetic radiation worn close to the body, such as mobile phones, and donates a portion of their proceeds to the UICC.
He describes the founding of the company, plans for expanding their range to include, and how the insulating properties can help prevent data theft as well as lower risks of cancer.
The Faraday Project is a fashion tech brand that I co-founded with Thomas Fayon two years ago. Basically what we do is mixing fashion and technology by bringing specificity into each of our products. So as the founding innovation of the brand we developed a special fabric, a silver-based fabric, that has the ability to block any electromagnetic waves, so hence the name of the brand, Faraday, because of the Faraday cage.
What does this mean for health?
The applications are direct because this allows to protect your body from any electromagnetic threats which means that I’m a regular guy and like any other guy I carry my cell phone in my pockets. It’s now a known fact that this is harmful, it can have an incidence over fertility or cancer issues. So what we basically do is we line every pocket of our products with this special lining, with this special fabric, and so it’s now harmless to carry your cell phone in your pockets. We protect you.
Could you tell us about the partnership with the UICC?
The UICC have been very supportive right from the beginning, actually. We wanted a partner, a strong partner, regarding health and regarding the impact that we could have not only for customers but on a more global level. Every one of us has a relative, someone in our family or friends, who had a bad encounter with cancer or we all have been touched with sorrow or pain. So at our own level we wanted to make a difference and we wanted at our own level to contribute to this. The UICC quickly appeared as the number one partner because of its action, because of its impact on research and global welfare. So this is why actually we wanted to make the UICC a partner and they were really supportive right from the beginning, they really believed in this project. So now we contribute up to $10 on every sale that we make.
How has the project been received thus far?
Really well. After less than a year of existence we were at the Bon Marché last month and the feedback was excellent on the products. The technical innovation that is inside every one of our products really caught the attention. There was pretty good feedback from all the fashion blogs, from the fashion magazines like the Fashion Mag and WWD, so both fashion and tech media got really interested and client feedback was excellent.
What other products are there, aside from jeans?
We have a whole look, it’s targeted for now as premium menswear but we basically do jeans, shirts, jackets, leather jackets, blazers, coats and of course we’re expanding. Our ambition is to have one innovation per year so next year’s innovation is about 100% mineral fabric made purely from nanominerals. We use nanotechnology to develop this fabric that is totally water repellent, that is thermostatic, antimicrobial, anti-UV and a lot of interesting stuff. So far we are the only one to use it. To go one step further we would like to improve our current technology on the Faraday cage to use the whole garment as a shield against electromagnetic waves.
Any final thoughts?
We’ve been delighted to work with the UICC and we really look forward to strengthening our partnership.
