Belmira Rodrigues - Managing Director, AORTIC

Belmira Rodrigues talks to ecancertv at the UICC World Cancer Congress 2014 about the next international conference, hosted by AORTIC.

The next big conference is going to be in North Africa, in Marrakesh, Morocco. It’s our tenth actual international cancer conference and it will take place from 18 – 22 November 2015. We are collaborating with the Lalla Salma Foundation for Cancer Prevention and Treatment. It also happens to be the tenth anniversary of the Foundation next year and it just somehow happens that on 22nd November when the conference ends is the Cancer Awareness Day in Morocco. So everything seems to have tied up quite nicely actually.

We do have some themes: the title of the conference is Road Map to Cancer Control in Africa and we’re introducing something new this time, we’re going to have live surgical workshops off site. We won’t be streaming live video but participants can actually go to the University Hospital for the live surgical workshops. We’re also thinking of introducing pathologists who go and visit the hospital and look at actual slides on site.

And multidisciplinary?

Multidisciplinary. We’re going to introduce some new topics: economics in cancer control, of course tobacco is always there as well, and then the main cancers in Africa – cervical cancer, prostate cancer and the liver cancers. So the programme is being developed at the moment and our website is up already, aorticconference.org, and the registration opens on 10th February and abstracts are being accepted from 10th February.
