Dr Michele Milella speaks to ecancer about an open-label, multi-centre, randomised study of TaRgeted intratumoural placement of phosphorous-32 microparticles added to FOLFIRINOX (FFX) versus FFX alone in patients with unresectable locally advanced pancreatic cancer (uLAPC).

Given the poor prognosis and limited treatment options in this setting, the trial aims to improve local disease control while maintaining an acceptable safety profile.

In this randomised study, patients received chemotherapy with or without the addition of P-32 microparticles, which deliver targeted beta radiation directly to the tumour.

Dr Milella says that the results demonstrate encouraging local disease control rates at 16 weeks in both groups, with outcomes exceeding predefined thresholds and suggesting meaningful antitumor activity with the addition of brachytherapy.

Overall, these findings support the feasibility and potential benefit of combining targeted radiotherapeutic approaches with systemic chemotherapy in pancreatic cancer, warranting further investigation to define its role in improving outcomes for this high need patient population.
