Prof Didier Verhoeven - University of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium

Prof Didier Verhoeven speaks to ecancer about a talk he presented at London Global Cancer Week 2025 on the topic of 'Understanding the burden of cancer health disparities'.

He explains that some of the big points to tackle in low and middle-income countries are 'raising awareness' and getting governments engaged with the fact that cancer is a big problem.

Prof Verhoeven details that ethnic disparity in cancer care is not only a socio-economic issue but also a genetic one. Most of the research into cancer therapies is done in high-income countries and there is no guarantee that this research will lend itself as well to those in low and middle-income countries.

He believes it is essential to begin openly addressing this issue, which affects both low and middle-income countries as well as high-income countries, and to challenge governments to take action.
