Louise McKenna-Mayes speaks to ecancer about a talk she presented at London Global Cancer Week 2025 on the topic of 'Personal stories – lived experiences of cancer disparities'.
She reflects on her lived experience of breast cancer, including undergoing a mastectomy without access to visual resources to support informed decision-making.
Louise explains that this led her to set up TONIBOBANDLOU CIC, in collaboration with award-winning photographer Toni Ward, and develop 'The Book of Boobs' which showcases a diverse range of women facing breast cancer reconstruction surgery.
She concludes by explaining that the resource is intended to work alongside cancer nurse specialists and be introduced early in the patient pathway.
