Dr Alfred Jatho

Dr Jatho studied Public Health at the International Health Sciences University, Kampala, Uganda, where he completed a BSc in Public Health. He also studied Environmental Health Science at the Mbale School of Hygiene, Makerere University. He completed a Masters of Public Health (Health Promotion) from the Uganda Martyrs University, Uganda. At a Doctoral level, Dr Jatho trained in cancer prevention, early detection, and policy in the Department of Cancer Control & Population Health, at the National Cancer Center Graduate School of Cancer Science and Policy, South Korea, where he received his PhD in Public Health.

Dr Jatho is the Community Cancer Health Educator and the Head of Department Community Cancer Services at the Uganda Cancer Institute, Kampala, Uganda. He also worked as the Head of Cancer Training, at the Uganda Cancer Institute. He is a PI and Co-PI in several cancer prevention and early detection studies.

His research interests centre mainly on public health practice and policy especially health promotion theory and practice, health policy and primary health care in the context of primary prevention and early detection of cancer. Notable areas include health literacy, health behavioural intervention trials and models, health communication, cancer risk appraisal, meta-analysis, implementation science, cancer risk factors’ population attributable fractions, cancer control planning, and policy.
