Cancer Research Technology media seminar on cancer stem cells
18 Jan 2011
26 Southampton Buildings, London, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
Cancer Research Technology, the technology development and commercialisation arm of Cancer Research UK, is holding a media round table on the potential of stem cells in cancer treatment.
The event will provide an overview of current research to identify the role of cancer stem cells in cancer development and discuss current research strategies to find new drugs targeting cancer stem cells to beat the disease.
Cancer stem cells are a hot topic in cancer biology and drug discovery. Some scientists believe that not all cancer cells have the power of eternal self-renewal – within a tumour there may be only a small population of cancer stem cells which have this capacity. As stem cells are frequently dormant – or resting - many existing cancer drugs, which kill dividing cells, will miss their target, leaving the cancer stem cells alive.
Confirmed speakers include:
- Dr. Helen Sabzevari, Global Head of Oncology-Immunotherapy, at Merck Serono
- Prof. Julian Blagg, Head of Medicinal Chemistry at the Cancer Research UK Cancer Therapeutics Unit, Institute of Cancer Research
- Prof. Fiona Watt , Deputy Director of Cancer Research UK’s Cambridge Research Institute
- Dr Clive Stanway, Chief Scientific Officer, Cancer Research Technology
