This module on Anatomy, Physiology, Histopathology, Genetics and Risk Factors is part of the e-learning course in surgery for colon cancer which is developed in partnership between ecancer and Health Education South West to form an educational partnership called ePOSSOM. Experts from across the UK have contributed to ensure this module meets the educational needs of post-graduate surgical trainees looking to extend their knowledge on colon cancer.

Objetivos educativos

By the end of this module, you should be able to:

Anatomy – Gain an understanding of the relevant surgical anatomy of the colon which includes: the gross anatomy of the colon (from ileocaecal valve to rectum), associated vascular and lymphatic distribution and important nearby structures (e.g. ureters and spleen)

Physiology – Understand how the large bowel works. Appreciate the function of colonocytes (e.g. fluid balance) and luminal facultative bacteria.

Histopathology – Describe the layers of the bowel wall from mucosa to mesentery to better understand Dukes’ classification

Risk Factors - Understand the difference between modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors for colorectal cancer.

Genetics – Gain an appreciation of the mode of inheritance, pathophysiology and clinical features of the main identifiable colorectal cancer syndromes.
