Dr Elena Zamagni - University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy

Dr Elena Zamagni speaks to ecancer at the 2019 MyKE Myeloma meeting in Barcelona about the diagnostic techniques available in smouldering multiple myeloma.

She emphasises the importance of using novel imaging techniques, rather than whole body X-ray to ensure a clear image of the bone marrow is obtained. These techniques should be also be combined with laboratory tests that measure the levels of serum-free light chains and proteinuria.

Prof Zamagni also discusses some of the risk factors that may contribute to disease progression, which include the presence of myeloma protein, proteinuria, cytogenetic abnormalities and focal lesions - along with diagnostic challenges that clinicians currently face.
