Dr Yadav Sapkota speaks to ecancer at the 2019 American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) meeting about the results from the study that performed a genetic analysis on childhood cancer survivors who had received cranial radiation.
Dr Sapkota describes the potential role of genetic predisposition in the development of strokes in childhood cancer survivors.
He also reports the examination of whole genome sequencing data from a cohort of survivors in a retrospective study, and the identification of a chromosomal locus on chromosome 5; which was strongly associated with an increased risk of stroke.
Dr Sapkota believes the discovery of this risk allele will help identify the population that are most at risk of developing strokes and will aid in the development of therapeutic interventions for these survivors.
