Prof Patricia Ganz speaks about the consideration that must be given to the increasing number of patients surviving cancer. When deciding on initial treatment, clinicians must look for treatments that are effective but not toxic and consider factors such as fertility. Prof Ganz discusses the importance of cooperation between the patient, their oncology team and their GP to ensure the patient is kept up to date of what they can do to improve their health and prevent recurrence. 15% of all cancers are secondary cancers in previously treated patients; to reduce this it is important for patients to be aware of simple things they can do such as regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight and avoidance of smoking or excessive drinking.
