New editorial on oncology education

A new editorial has just been published in ecancermedicalscience, entitled Oncology and medical education—past, present and future.  The author, Judith Cave, from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, discusses the current state of oncology education for doctors in the UK.

Cave talks about the importance of elearning for the oncology education community, in order to increase the educational value of the time doctors spend keeping up to date. Newly qualified doctors will care for many patients with cancer, and all doctors need to know when an urgent oncology referral is required and to be aware of the pace of change in oncology, as well as involving patients in teaching whenever appropriate.

The editorial goes on to explore ways of inspiring junior doctors to consider a career in oncology, and emphasises the importance of teaching transferable skills.

ecancer offers free e-learning courses for surgical trainees on cancer sugery that follow the UK ISCP (Intercollegiate Surgical Curriculum Programme) Curriculum. Surgical trainees were partnered with more senior trainees to develop the content of the modules and provide key educational information for other surgical trainees and healthcare professionals.
