The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has announced its new Open Access policy to enable "the unrestricted access and reuse of all peer-reviewed published research funded, in whole or in part, by the foundation, including any underlying data sets."
The foundation has published the new policy online. After a two-year embargo period ending January 1, 2017, publications supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation must adhere to the five-point policy.
One of these conditions is that publication will be on open-access terms. Another states that data underlying the published results must be immediately available for public examination.
The foundation states that it will pay "reasonable fees" required by the publisher.
As other global health bodies such as the World Health Organisation consider open-access publishing policies, these clarifications will be invaluable.
The World Cancer Declaration recognises that to make major reductions in premature deaths, innovative education and training opportunities for healthcare workers in all disciplines of cancer control need to improve significantly.
ecancer plays a critical part in improving access to education for medical professionals.
