New editorial on the sustainability of open access publishing

ecancermedicalscience has just published an editorial discussing the thorny issues of how to make the results of research not only widely accessible but also affordable.

In Open access: What price affordability?, Richard Poynder sets the current publishing scene in the light of worldwide government and funder open access mandates and questions whether it is realistic to expect the scientific community to be able to pay high article processing charges in Gold open access journals.

ecancermedicalscience uses a “Pay what you can afford” publishing model – only around 10% of our authors pay article publication charges, as we are committed to supporting authors with little or no funding and those from the developing world.
