A new editorial by Richard Smith, ex-editor of the BMJ, has just been published in ecancermedicalscience discussing the new ways in which the impact and quality of scientific articles are measured. He highlights the difficulties involved in finding a viable alternative to the impact factor and questions whether social impact should be given more importance than number of citations by funding bodies.
