Professor Peter Johnson, Cancer Research UK's chief clinician, said: "We strongly welcome the announcement that proton beam therapy facilities will be funded at the Cancer Research UK Centres at UCLH and The Christie. Proton beam therapy has important benefits over conventional radiotherapy for patients with several types of cancer, such as brain tumours in children.
"This announcement will mean that patients can access the best treatments for them without having to travel abroad, and that the UK is able to offer the most up to date treatments."
"We want to see improvements to radiotherapy services across the UK, to match the best in the world, and ensure no-one misses out on cutting edge treatment. Today's announcement shows that progress is being made towards achieving that goal."

We are an independent charity and are not backed by a large company or society. We raise every penny ourselves to improve the standards of cancer care through education. You can help us continue our work to address inequalities in cancer care by making a donation.
Any donation, however small, contributes directly towards the costs of creating and sharing free oncology education.
Together we can get better outcomes for patients by tackling global inequalities in access to the results of cancer research.
Thank you for your support.
