Congratulations to Gianmarco Contino, a surgical oncologist from the European Institute of Oncology, who has been awarded the prestigious ESSO major training award for 2012.
The aim of these very competitive fellowships is to allow keen young surgeons to visit a specialist centre, expand their experience and learn new techniques.
Dr. Contino’s primary interest is in gastrointestinal tumours and in particular translational research in this field.
After completing his residency in Surgical Oncology at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan (University of Milan). He moved the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston (Harvard Medical School), as a post-doctoral fellow.
Current research interests are the contribution of inflammation to Pancreatic Cancer onset and the use of minimally invasive robotic-assisted procedures for several gastrointestinal conditions. He is completing an international PhD program in translational medicine at the Bicocca University, Milan.
The ESSO major training award will allow him to visit the Robotic Surgery division at the University of Illinois at Chicago, which hosts the largest robotic surgery program in US. The results of his research carried out during this period will be presented at the ESSO meeting of 2014 at an invited major award presentation.

We are an independent charity and are not backed by a large company or society. We raise every penny ourselves to improve the standards of cancer care through education. You can help us continue our work to address inequalities in cancer care by making a donation.
Any donation, however small, contributes directly towards the costs of creating and sharing free oncology education.
Together we can get better outcomes for patients by tackling global inequalities in access to the results of cancer research.
Thank you for your support.
