ecancer becomes fully accredited e-learning provider

ecancer.org has been awarded accredited medical education provider status by the EACCME (European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education), the first UK organisation to be recognised as such and the only provider entirely focused on cancer.

The award means that healthcare professionals will be able to claim CME points when they complete e-learning modules on ecancer.org. CME credits can be converted to AMA PRA credits for those based in the US.

With rapid changes in clinical practice and prescribing guidelines, health care professionals are required to complete a certain number of CME accredited activities per year in order to maintain their professional status and to ensure they are offering patients the best standard of care.

Over the past five years ecancer has created a wide range of online e-learning resources which have already been taken by healthcare professionals in over 100 countries. ecancer works with a diverse range of experts and organisations such as the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and The International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) to address gaps in educational needs such as 'African Palliative Care' and cancers in geriatric patients.

All modules are made freely available to the oncology community in line with ecancer's mission to break down financial barriers to medical education. The funding for creation comes from a mix of charitable donations and independent grants.

Prof Gordon McVie, Chairman of ecancer said "We are a not for profit, independent organisation which has been providing free resources to the medical oncology community for the last ten years. This award is a great recognition of the high quality of the e-learning produced by the organisation and which has helped thousands of doctors from around the world improve their clinical practice and patient care. Accreditation status will mean that we can speed up the process to get new e-learning to the medical community and help more doctors earn CME points."

About UEMS-EACCME®
The UEMS-EACCME® has provided an international accreditation system applicable throughout Europe for CME meetings for the last 12 years. Over that time, significant developments have occurred in CME-CPD that have included international mutual recognition agreements with the USA and Canada, and major changes in the regulatory framework for the support of medical education.

Following an extensive set of consultations, the UEMS-EACCME® has developed new criteria that reflect this new regulatory environment and provide a developmental stimulus for the achievement of higher standards for medical education in Europe.
