Lung Cancer: Coding Topography, Morphology and Stage

These modules on coding topography, morphology and cancer stage have been developed through a collaboration between the European Network of Cancer Registries, Joint Research Centre of the European Commission and ecancer.

The purpose of the modules is to train the cancer registrars to implement the international classifications for coding a cancer case.

This module 2 presents the rules for coding topography, morphology and stage of lung cancer cases using the third edition of the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O-3) and the eight edition of the UICC TNM Classification of malignant tumours.

Target audience

These training modules have been designed for cancer registry staff, eg. coders, database managers, and analysts.

Learning objectives

By the end of this module, you should:

1) Know the rules for coding topography, morphology and stage of lung cancer cases;
2) Understand how to assign the proper morphology code;
3) Know how to define the T, N and M categories, and stage;
4) Be able to apply the rules for coding a lung cancer case in the practice.
