Tartu University Hospital

Tartu University Hospital was originally founded in May 1804 by the medical scientist Daniel Georg Balk. At that time the population of Tartu was only 9,000. In 1843 however, the hospital lost its status and only a women’s clinic remained. In 1993, after Estonian Independence, an umbrella corporation called the Tartu University Hospital was created with the actual specifically built institution being founded in December 1998. It is the largest hospital in Estonia.

The department of Surgical Oncology performs over 3,500 operations, about 11,000 radiotherapy sessions and about 4,500 chemotherapy sessions annually. The clinic saw Professor Hele Everaus perform the first bone marrow transplant in the Baltic States at Tartu in 1993 and since 1996 the clinic has performed chemotherapy research on an international level. The Radiology Clinic uses X-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRT, isotope diagnostics and PET. It employs 36 doctors, and 59 nurses with more than 250,000 procedures and research projects performed at a cost of 220 million Kroons.

The hospital cooperates with the university in the continuous training of students and staff, with 99.6% of nursing staff receiving training each year, ensuring a consistently high standard of care.

The mission of the hospital as a whole is ‘to ensure the continuity and development of Estonian medicine through high-level integrated medical treatment, training and research’.
