Istituto Regina Elena (IRE)


The IRE has been operating since 1926 and the clinical hospital, located in Viale Regina Elena, was opened on 21st April 1933 by Her Majesty the Queen Elena. The Institute was recognised as an Institute of Scientific Hospital Care (IRCCS) in 1939.

Nowadays, the main areas of research are in epidemiology, etiology of cancer, transformation and tumour progression and experimental therapies. The IRE is also a reference centre of the World Health Organisation for digestive endoscopy and stomach cancer and since 1982, the Epidemiology Service of the IRE has coordinated and directed the Cancer Registry for the whole of Central and South America.
