Dr Elaine Tomlins

Dr Tomlins has been a cancer nurse for over 30 years. She qualified as an RN in 1984 and gained extensive experience in oncology BMT and HIV nursing in Australia. She then gained an oncology certificate in the NSW College of Nursing and a degree in nursing from the University of Sydney in 1994. In Southampton England, she worked as a Clinical Nurse Specialist for intravenous therapy, and gained an MSc in 1999 and 2015 and a PhD in 2009.

Dr Tomlins has over 50 publications and has presented at national and international events. She is on the editorial board for Cancer Nursing Practice and has recently co-authored a text book called ‘Women’s cancers’. She is a former member of NHS England Chemotherapy Reference Group and previously an elected board member of UKONS. She now is a board member of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care, where she is currently delivering an education package across Europe.

Dr Tomlins has a joint appointment with University Hospital Southampton as a Consultant Nurse in chemotherapy and the University of Southampton where she splits her time between teaching an MSc in cancer and her research. Her main interests in cancer care relates to supportive care, particularly the management of nausea and vomiting and vascular access as well as identification and treatment of toxicities.
