Dr Stanley C. Macaden - Christian Medical Association of India, Bengaluru, India

Dr Macaden meets with ecancer at IAPCON 2017 to outline the ten principles of care used by the International Collaborative for Best Care for the Dying Person.

This International Collaborative for Best Care for the Dying Person involves the ten principles of care which are being used in all the countries which are doing the collaborative work. The ten principles are first of all it begins with the recognition that the person is dying and then having that frank discussion with the patient as far as possible but certainly with the family. And the third thing is spiritual care and the fourth thing is anticipatory prescribing of drugs for the common symptoms that are there during the end of life such as pain and breathlessness and nausea/vomiting and restlessness. Then we have talking about the cessation or starting of nutrition and also about hydration and reassessing them and whether to continue or stop both these aspects and also explaining this whole care plan to the patient, if possible, and also to the family; to the person if possible and also to the family. Summarising the whole thing and reviewing the person as much as possible.
