Prof Van Leeuwen, Cancer Epidemiology Unit, Netherlands Cancer Institute
In the Netherlands 14% of all cancers currently diagnosed are second malignancies. The development of the second cancer may or may not be related to the treatment for the previous cancer since genetic risk or predisposing factors may actually be the cause. This is an important issue in oncology and further research is needed to identify risk factors and educate cancer patients.
