Giovanni Sitia

Giovanni Sitia, MD, is group-leader in the Immunopathology Unit, Division of Immunology, San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy. He is an experimental scientist who has dedicated his career to the field of viral liver diseases. After his degree in Medicine & Surgery from the University of Milan he was a post-doc at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, CA, USA. He returned to Milan in 2004 to work at The San Raffaele Scientific Institute (DIBIT). He contributed to define the mechanisms responsible for the recruitment of antigen non-specific inflammatory cells into the liver following antigen recognition by cytotoxic T cells (CTL). In 2008, after a sabbatical in Dr Yasunari Nakamoto’s lab at the Department of Gastroenterology, Kanazawa University, Japan, he set up at San Raffaele the HBV transgenic mouse model of T cell-mediated chronic liver injury and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that serves as a platform to develop new anti-angiogenic and immunotherapeutic therapies to treat established hepatocellular carcinomas.
