Professor Malcolm Mason

Malcolm Mason OBE is Professor of Cancer Studies in the School of Medicine, Cardiff University, Wales, UK. He was formerly the Cancer Research Wales Professor of Clinical Oncology, a post that he held for 19 years.

He is a clinical researcher who has been a Chief or leading investigator on some of the last decade’s most important clinical trials in prostate cancer, which have led to worldwide changes in medical practice, and will prevent many thousands of deaths from prostate cancer. He was formerly Dean of Research in Life Sciences at Cardiff University, Chairman of the UK National Cancer Research Institute’s Prostate Cancer Clinical Studies Group, and has Chaired, or served on, numerous committees for major research funders, including the MRC, Cancer Research UK, Prostate Cancer UK, and Movember. He is a member of the Core Group for the UICC (Union for International Cancer Control) TNM staging and prognostic factors programme.

In Wales he was formerly Chair of the Cancer Standards Group for the NHS, and in 2003 he founded the Wales Cancer Bank, which was the model for some of the foremost tumour banks in the UK. Also in Wales, he has served on the Life Sciences Bridging Fund’s Scientific Advisory Board. He was appointed OBE in 2017 for services to the NHS and to Cancer Research.
