Istituto Scientifico Romagnolo per lo Studio e la Cura dei Tumori (IRST)

About

The institute opened in November 2006 in the renovated facilities of the former Hospital of Meldola (in Romagna), primarily as a research centre but also as a care facility for clinical trials. The care facility includes a Radiotherapy department with a 15mv linear accelerator, a tomotherapy unit and CT simulator. The Medical Oncology department is split into four main groups dealing with breast, uro-gynaecological, gastrointestinal, and lung and other diseases.

The institute is focused upon closing the gap between biomedical research and when its interpreted into practical patient care; this not only includes translational research, but also clinical trials (phase I – IV), comprehensive on-site patient care, and experimentation with new organizational models. In this the centre collaborates internationally and continuously trains students and staff as well as holding regional and national training events. The institute publishes around 30-50 high impact factor papers annually.
