Dr Erik Thunnissen speaks to ecancer about his talk at WCLC 2023 on a large reproducibility study which looked at an assessment of invasion in pulmonary adenocarcinomas.

He explains the aim of the study was to investigate the potential for an improved classification system due to the challenges involved in accurately assigning invasion status based on the criteria outlined in the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of pulmonary adenocarcinomas.

They initially assessed the cases according to the WHO criteria and then underwent a tutorial, after which they scored the cases based on the modified classification.

The results suggested the WHO criteria for determining invasion faced challenges in achieving consistent and reproducible results however the modified classification demonstrated higher reproducibility. This suggests the revised classification overcomes the limitations of the WHO criteria.
