Prof Pier Giuseppe - European Institute of Oncology, Milan, Italy

Dr Pier Giuseppe discusses stems cells and the important implications they have in the early stages of tumour development. During early tumour development, once an oncogene is expressed in normal cells it induces DNA damage; the cells are pushed into a senescing state. Ultimately the question presented is how stem cells process DNA damage. Findings have started to show that when an oncogene is expressed the stem cells survive early on and DNA activity plays a critical role.
